Created for a family home in central Idaho, this original landscape composition captures favorite views of the Sawtooth Range, the misty valleys along the Upper Salmon River, and groves of pine and aspen trees that frame the client’s property. Illuminating the epoxy was taken to a whole new level of dynamic lighting by the WoodLab team, with a programmed OLED display mounted behind the art piece. Stunning sunsets and moon rises are animated across the epoxy sky and reflected in the foreground pond, making this the first Rare Canvas art piece with motion graphics.
This image gallery showcases just a handful of the steps required to build this special piece.
Design is transferred to the wood surface after topography and live edge is carved.Detail view of hand-scribed lines in wood surface.Dozens of colored stain pens are used to bring mountain details and distant trees into the scene.Valley trees are carved and stained, introducing a middle ground perspective.Applying a custom stain wash sends mountain forms far into the distance. All surface shaping, edge detail and staining is completed before any sky or river epoxy is poured.Pouring the sky in layers provides control of cloud shapes, 3D sky effects, transparency, and overall color matching.Dozens of trees, bushes, and foreground details are cut from different species of wood veneer. Each veneer tree is hand colored into the scene, using a variety of over 25 different green stains.Tree shadows are achieved by pouring a thin layer of colored epoxy into the foreground pond. The illusion of distant mist, settling in the river valley, is created with a surface layer of epoxy.Distant fencing that boarder the rolling hills, are details of perspective illustrated on the wood surface with fine stain brushes.Fencing closer in the foreground is made from thin wood inlays that sit just above the wood surface.Trees are carefully arranged into the composition and glued into place.Foreground fencing, cut from solid wood, stained, and inlaid into the wood surface, adds more depth and three dimensional texture. From back to front, every element of the design, including carved water surface detail, is layered into the scene.Special inlays, mounted to the back side of the pond create the illusion of tree reflections in shimmering water.Standing the piece up in the shop for the first time shows off the amazing glow of the back-lit epoxy sky, river and pond. After final surface finishing, this piece is ready to deliver to WoodLab.Finished piece — left.Finished piece — center.Finished piece — right.Finished piece showcasing an animated moon rise scene.Finished piece showcasing an animated aurora borealis scene.
